AEDM day 7 - an online colour tool

Jane LaFazio featured this on the Sketchbook Challenge blog and I just LoVe it!  It's slightly annoying in that it doesn't seem to be able to see yellows but I think it really has potential re looking at the colours you use in your work, and I also think that the swatches would make a great starting point for a second piece of work.

I did the circle painting first and was a bit disappointed by the results.  As you see, no yellow!  But my other image choices gave better results.

The program is called 'Colour Generator'.  You just upload a photo and it creates a number of swatches featuring the colours you've used.  Cool isn't it?!!

stitchy, waxy, textured canvas at The Cubby Hole

I've had a busy few days just recently - working in the nursery across the road with the two and three year olds (which I LoVeD), teaching an art journalling repeat class at Paddy's Stamping Place, then teaching a "stitchy, waxy, textured canvas" at The Cubby Hole yesterday.  This was a fabulous class, full of smiles and laughter, especially when I showed the teeny weeny frying pan I'd used on my stove at home to melt my wax and Nigel produced a stove from his van so we could replicate the event in the workshop!!

It was a busy and varied workshop, requiring such concentration that I think it's the quietest workshop I've ever taught!!

I have to say the resulting canvases were absolutely STuNNiNG.  Carol also holds exhibitions of artwork in the shop but this week was a gap between two exhibitions so we hung our own canvases on the wall!

canvases with texture

I have just spent a great evening at my children's secondary school. They are running evening courses for parents and the one I signed up for was 'contemporary canvases'. The art department is to die for, it oozes the work of talented students, so it was fantastic just to work in such inspiring surroundings.

We were shown how to blend coloured emulsion and use masks, and how to add texture using caulk, polyfilla and glass paints. After practising these techniques on paper, we were let loose on a small canvas. My tree is a masked circle sprayed over with silver paint, with leaves added using glass paint liner. I'd like to add texture within the leaves using beads and embroidery thread.

The classes last for another two Tuesdays. Our homework for this week is to choose a canvas size to fit somewhere at home and design an image to go on it. We have been provided with an ideas sheet so we can use one of those or design our own. I'm planning on something based on a flower image. Will have to get the design passed by my husband ;)
